Channeling Self Awareness to Reach New Heights

Self-awareness is an essential leadership quality to be successful in life and your career. Knowing what motivates you helps you tap into drive and ambition you may not even know you have.

What I’ve learned over the past 45 years is that I am a goals-oriented person who always needs to focus on a new challenge and achievement to stay motivated. At work, I pour 100% of me into building a team of people aligned around achieving the strategic goals of an organization. As soon we realize the achievements, it's on to the next new challenge.

Getting healthy was the goal of Summer 2018. Now that Autumn is here I needed a new challenge to put my fitness to the test.

Admittedly I didn’t know much about Mount Kilimanjaro until I stood at its base 20 years ago. I was a curious young man from a small rural community in Newfoundland traveling and exploring the world for the first time. I was in complete awe of the tallest freestanding mountain in the world rising so magnificently above the baobab trees in the Serengeti with its beautiful snow-capped peak. I knew I would come back and complete the trek to the summit. It was just a matter of preparing and prioritizing.

Nearing my 46th birthday and being the fittest of my life was the motivation I needed. Tomorrow I leave for Cuzco in the Andes Mountains of Peru to complete my training. Then, just two weeks from today I will begin my trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. If all goes as planned, I will reach the peak on October 23rd at sunrise.

It’s a world wind of emotion to be so close to an experience that everyone describes as life-changing and cathartic.

Stay tuned for my next post from the first cellular/WIFI signal I can find in Tanzania after completing this fantastic trek.

Cheers, Leroy
